A celebration of reading

Month: April 2017

Book Sources

Everyone prefers to obtain their books from various sources, and enjoy different book formats.

My Top Book Sources, in order:

  1. The Library
  2. Powell’s Books in Portland, Oregon, weirdly (I live in Washington)
  3. Used book stores
  4. Amazon (mostly romance novels for some reason)
  5. Village Books (local book store)
  6. Barnes and Noble
  7. The Free Little Libraries all over Bellingham
  8. ARCs
  9. Borrowed from friends
  10. I bought it for school
  11. I’ve just had it forever?

Book format:

  1. Paperbacks that I own
  2. Hardbacks from the library
  3. Paperbacks from the library
  4. Hardbacks that I own

I don’t like e-books or audio books. I just end up spacing out when listening to audio books. If I had an e-reader I might get into e-books for their convenience, but I love the feel of paper books in my hands. I have a weird habit of ruffling the edges of the pages constantly as I read. It helps me concentrate. Does anyone else do that?

2016 Reads

2017 has been a productive reading year for me so far, but 2016 wasn’t so bad. I thought I’d share some of the books I read last year–there were some good ones, and some not-so-good ones. Without further ado:

  • The White Forest– Adam McOmber
  • Security– Gina Wohlsdorf
  • Slade House– David Mitchell
  • Tipping the Velvet– Sarah Waters
  • The Winter Palace– A Novel of Catherine the Great- Eva Stachniak
  • Dark Alchemy: A Dr. Sylvia Strange Novel– Sarah Lovett
  • Wentworth Hall– Abby Grahame
  • The Confessions of Catherine de Medici– C.W. Gortner
  • City of Dark Magic– Magnus Flyte
  • Alif the Unseen– G. Willow Wilson (this was for a class, but it’s one of my favorites!)

I have a lot of opinions about these. I look forward to sharing them with you.

My 2017 Reading List

This year, my goal is to read 25 books. It’s a relatively small goal, yes, but I’m a slow reader and I wanted to make my goal achievable (SMART goals, anyone?). Anyways, here is my list of already-completed books since January 1. As you can see, I’ve gotten into several series already. Reviews will be forthcoming.

  1. The Girl on the Train– Paula Hawkins
  2. Cinder– Marissa Meyer
  3. Year of Yes– Shonda Rhimes
  4. Matched– Ally Condie
  5. Scarlet– Marissa Meyer
  6. Delirium– Lauren Oliver
  7. The Selection– Kiera Cass
  8. Crossed– Marissa Meyer
  9. The Elite– Kiera Cass
  10. Cress– Marissa Meyer
  11. Winter– Marissa Meyer
  12. The One– Kiera Cass
  13. Wishful Drinking– Carrie Fisher

Some of the books I’m reading/planning on reading are:

  • Carve the Mark– Veronica Roth
  • Fairest– Marissa Meyer
  • Heartless– Marissa Meyer (I love this one so far!)
  • The Fate of the Tearling– Erika Johansen
  • Postcards from the  Edge– Carrie Fisher
  • Taught by America– Sarah Sentilles
  • Ruby Red– Kerstin Gier (recommended by a librarian)
  • Pandemonium– Lauren Oliver

I started Reached, by Ally Condie, but I really don’t like it so I’m not sure if I’ll finish it.
